The world’s only Whale Crier has traded the Cape Whale Coast for Durban this week, captivating audiences at Africa’s Travel Indaba, the continent’s leading tourism trade show.
This iconic ambassador has been sharing the wonders of the Overstrand’s marine life with travel representatives from 26 countries attending the prestigious event. Since his arrival, the Whale Crier has been busy, educating visitors about the diverse whale species that grace the Overstrand’s shores.
A highlight was his encounter with South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, who warmly welcomed him and engaged in a lively “whale conversation.” Social media has been abuzz with photos and videos of the Whale Crier, his signature kelp horn held high, a familiar call to action for whale watchers back home in Hermanus. An interview with Radio 702 led to another with the kelp horn sounding over the Johannesburg airwaves. A national media business has also shown interest in staging sporting events, especially golf, in the Overstrand.
This year’s Indaba coincides perfectly with the arrival of the first Southern Right Whales for the 2024 season. It presents a golden opportunity to network with travel professionals and direct them south to explore the charming towns and villages of the Overstrand, where a world of adventure awaits.
Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie said “Marking a first, Overstrand Tourism is collaborating with local tourism product owners at this year’s Indaba. This strategic partnership allows visitors to experience the diverse offerings firsthand, showcasing the breadth and depth of experiences available to travellers in the Overstrand”. With Marine Dynamics, The Windsor Hotel and White Shark Projects present there was a heightened energy that brought more traffic. The stand has been a hive of activity, attracting journalists, media representatives, and fellow destinations marking organisations eager to learn more about the extraordinary Overstrand. The stage is set for an event better presence next year.
